Congressman Dan Crenshaw, along with Congressmembers Earl L. "Buddy" Carter, Vern Buchanan, Lloyd Smucker, Rick Allen, Mike Kelly, and Julia Letlow, has introduced the Healthcare Freedom and Choice Act (H.R. 379). This bill aims to reinstate a Trump-era policy that expands health care options for Americans by allowing access to short-term, limited-duration insurance (STLDI) plans for up to 36 months. The Biden Administration had previously reduced this period to four months in 2024.
The STLDI plans are intended to provide affordable temporary health coverage options for those who may not have other insurance alternatives. Rep. Carter emphasized the importance of accessible health care during challenging economic times: “Limiting Americans’ access to health care is never good policy, particularly during a cost-of-living crisis courtesy of the Biden-Harris Administration."
Rep. Crenshaw expressed support for removing what he described as unnecessary federal requirements around short-term health insurance: “The first Trump Administration expanded plan offerings by removing unnecessary federal requirements around short-term health insurance.”
Rep. Buchanan criticized the current administration's approach: “The Biden administration’s rule limiting Americans’ heath care choices is misguided and costly." He also highlighted the impact on small business owners and families facing rising premiums.
Congressman Allen voiced his approval of the proposed legislation: “Americans overwhelmingly support choice in healthcare.” He stated that the bill would restore a policy giving taxpayers additional options and autonomy for short-term care.
Rep. Mike Kelly also backed the initiative, focusing on affordability: “Lawmakers should work to make health care more affordable for Americans.”
The bill has garnered support from several organizations including America First Policy Institute, Americans for Prosperity (AFP), National Federation of Independent Businesses (NFIB), Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI), The LIBRE Initiative, Health Benefits Institute, Heritage Action among others.
