On December 12, Congressman Dan Crenshaw of Texas sent a letter to the Congressional Budget Office. The letter requested an estimate of the total cost of gender transitions for minors in federal programs.

Crenshaw stated, "Cosmetic self-harm for minors is not medicine. Children’s hospitals offering gender-transition procedures should be stripped of their federal funding." He further emphasized the need to "expose the full extent of government complicity in this ideological fantasy," with plans to address it during budget reconciliation in the next Congress.

Stanley Goldfarb, MD, Board Chair of Do No Harm, supported Crenshaw's actions by saying, “Children are held hostage for the rest of their lives by the irreversible nature of sex change treatments. Do No Harm applauds Rep. Crenshaw for holding the Biden administration accountable for misusing tax dollars to fund these harmful procedures." He added that between 2019 and 2023, nearly 14,000 minors underwent such treatments and noted an increase in patients expressing regret.

Craig DeRoche, President and CEO of Family Policy Alliance, also praised Crenshaw's efforts. He stated, "Family Policy Alliance commends Rep. Crenshaw for this hard work. Kids are not experiments. The Federal government should not be funding these barbaric sterilization and mutilation procedures."

As part of his role on the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health, Crenshaw has been active against what he terms radical gender ideology in health care. His bill aimed at prohibiting funding to children's hospitals performing these procedures on minors passed out of the House Energy & Commerce Committee in 2023.

The Children's Hospital GME Support Reauthorization Act requires reauthorization every five years.
