Harris County joined the Houston-Galveston Area Council in launching a $10 million Small Business Economic Assistance Loan Program.
The program was launched during an April 7 meeting between county officials and the council. The program will help small businesses recover after the coronavirus crisis is over.
County judge Lina Hidalgo said officials aren't able to bail out the "entire county's economy," which is why the federal government is trying to help businesses recover.
"We're not set up for that," Hidalgo said. "That's why the federal government is trying, and as we all assess their package and read the analysis, we know that it'll be hard depending on how deep this crisis goes for any level of government to fully bail out the economy; that's why it's so important for folks to stay home so we can get over this quickly and turn the economy back on."
As of April 11, Texas reported 11,671 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, including 226 deaths. Harris County leads the state with 3,047 confirmed cases of COVID-19.
