Several Houston Emergency Services District political races slated for May 2 have been canceled – but it had nothing to do with the coronavirus crisis sweeping the state.
While many counties and cities answered the call from the secretary of state’s office to move all elections to July, it wasn’t necessary in some northwest regions of the county. The elections were canceled due to a lack of candidates.
Other races, not canceled due to lack of interest, were moved to July in keeping with the secretary of state’s order.
On March 31 the governor issued a “stay at home” order for all Texans until April 30, aligning the state order with current federal guidelines. The order came after most large counties and cities in the state had already issued such orders. For example, Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo issued a “stay at home” order on March 11.
As of April 5, Texas reported 6,812 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, including 127 deaths. Harris County leads the state with 1,284 confirmed cases of COVID-19.
