Steve Toth, a Republican member of the Texas State House representing the 15th district since 2019, has recently voiced criticism regarding the state’s primary election process and the performance of Texas Secretary of State Jane Nelson in a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter).
On October 9, 2025, Toth claimed that Democratic voters are participating in Republican primaries, stating, “If Democrats weren’t voting in Republican Primaries then closing primaries wouldn’t concern anyone. Because ‘Yes’ they sure as heck are voting in Republican primaries is why they’re fighting us. This is why Texans can’t have nice things. Our SOS is siding with Democrats.”
Later that same day, Toth called for action against Jane Nelson, writing, “Texas Secretary of State, Jane Nelson needs to be fired by our Governor. Maintaining the sanctity of Texas elections is an imperative she just doesn’t grasp. #TXLege”
On October 10, 2025, Toth posted a third tweet containing only a link: “https://t.co/yq4Q7x2I7o”.
Toth’s remarks reflect ongoing debates within Texas over open versus closed primary systems and concerns among some Republicans about crossover voting by members of other parties. The Secretary of State’s office oversees state elections and has faced scrutiny from various political figures regarding election integrity.
Toth was elected to the Texas State House in 2019 to represent District 15 after succeeding Mark Keough.
