Rep. Dan Crenshaw and Sen. Rubio introduced legislation this week that would open an investigation into the Centers for Disease Control’s messaging on unscientific mask and vaccine mandates.

“The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has sown distrust in the American people with its reactionary recommendations that spurred vaccine and mask mandates during the COVID-19 pandemic,” Rep. Dan Crenshaw said. “Americans deserve answers. I’m proud to lead this bicameral legislation with Sen. Rubio, which will force a full accounting of the messaging the CDC engaged in during COVID-19.”

The Restore Public Health Institution Trust Act requires the Government Accountability Office to review the below items and make recommendations on ways the CDC should improve their approach:

  • The data being used to make recommendations;
  • The impact that inconsistent messaging has had on Americans’ trust in the institution and willingness to follow the guidance, including as it relates to vaccine uptake;
  • The role of vaccine mandates in vaccine hesitancy, including for the school-age population and vaccines on the recommended immunization schedules for children, adolescents, and adults of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices of the CDC;
  • The degree to which outside entities, like teachers unions, were in a position to impact recommendations.

Senator Marco Rubio introduced the companion Senate bill.
