A recent poll conducted by the University of Texas indicates that Attorney General Ken Paxton is outperforming Senator John Cornyn in a hypothetical general election matchup. The poll results show Paxton with a 29% favorable rating and a 45% unfavorable rating, resulting in a net favorability of -19%. In comparison, Cornyn has a 25% favorable rating and a 49% unfavorable rating, giving him a net favorability of -24%. Meanwhile, Congressman Wesley Hunt has a net favorability of -2%, with 16% viewing him favorably and 18% unfavorably.
The findings come despite significant financial backing for Cornyn’s campaign. Pro-Cornyn groups like the Senate Leadership Fund (SLF) and Texans for a Conservative Majority have reportedly spent over $40 million to bolster his campaign. This includes more than $30 million on television advertising alone, as well as extensive mail campaigns from One Nation targeting Texas households.
U.S. Rep. Wesley Hunt (R-Tomball), who has served in Congress since 2023 representing Texas’s 38th District, criticized the financial strategy supporting Cornyn. Hunt said, “As the GOP Nominee in Texas, I will refuse and return any and all money spent on my behalf by SLF or One Nation in the general election.” He emphasized that resources should be directed to other candidates like Michael Whatley and Mike Rodgers, who he believes need it more given their states’ political landscapes.
Hunt’s political career includes defeating Melissa McDonough in the 2024 general election with 62.9% of the vote and winning against Duncan Klussmann in 2022 with 63%.
