Representative Dan Crenshaw, a U.S. Congressman from Texas who has consistently won re-election since 2018, posted a series of tweets on September 7, 2025, reflecting on historical events where rights were determined by the state rather than inherent to individuals.
In one post, Crenshaw wrote: “Nazi Germany. The Weimar Constitution promised rights, but Hitler rewrote them overnight. Jews and political enemies lost every ‘right’ they had. Why? Because those rights came from the state.” (September 7, 2025).
He continued his commentary with a reference to revolutionary France: “1790s France. The Revolution tossed out God, declared rights came from the state, and claimed to act on behalf of ‘reason.’ The result? Mass executions and show trials. It was known as The Reign of Terror.” (September 7, 2025).
Crenshaw also cited Maoist China in his series: “Mao’s China. Mao mocked the idea of God-given rights. The Communist Party was the only authority. If you disagreed with the regime, you disappeared.” (September 7, 2025).
These tweets align with Crenshaw’s broader political messaging about the origins of individual rights and government power.
Crenshaw has maintained his seat in Congress through several election cycles—defeating Peter Filler in 2024 with over 65% of the vote; Robin Fulford in 2022 with nearly an identical margin; Sima Ladjevardian in 2020; and Todd Litton in his first election victory in 2018.
