Representative Dan Crenshaw, a U.S. Congressman who has consistently secured re-election since 2018, addressed the origins of individual rights and government authority in a series of posts on September 7, 2025.
In his first post, Crenshaw referenced historical events in the Soviet Union: “Soviet Union. Stalin’s constitution ‘guaranteed’ rights, as long as they aligned with Party doctrine. Freedom of speech? Only if you agreed with the government. Millions were sent to the gulags.” (September 7, 2025).
He then drew a parallel to contemporary political discourse in the United States: “So when Tim Kaine says your rights come from government, he’s echoing ideas that have crushed freedom around the world and defying the very principles America was built on. If someone thinks they give you your rights… They also believe they can take them away.” (September 7, 2025).
Crenshaw concluded by contrasting American founding principles with those he attributed to other regimes: “Now contrast that with America: Our founders were explicit in declaring that rights come from God, government’s job is to secure them — not to define them, not to distribute them, and certainly not to take them.” (September 7, 2025).
Dan Crenshaw has represented Texas’s Second Congressional District since his initial election victory over Todd Litton in 2018. He has since maintained his seat through successive elections against Sima Ladjevardian in 2020, Robin Fulford in 2022, and Peter Filler in 2024.
